Culture and ArtsTwo artists-in-residence build one large installation out of their own family histories, and visitors are invited to handle the work rather than keep a polite distance. This is the outcome of a summer residency at Vietnam Art Collection in Tây Hồ, where family memory gets taken apart through photography, collage and AI manipulation.
The title chung thân carries two meanings at once in Vietnamese: a life prison sentence, and being bound to someone for life. Both readings sit inside the work. The artists' own English subtitle is «and two lives become as one».
What is in the space:
Nguyễn Vân-Nhi works in Hanoi across memory, intimacy, motherhood and the friction between tradition and modern life. Nguyễn Duy Anh is a queer moving-image artist, a member of Ba-bau Collective and co-founder of Hoa Quỳnh Cinema.
Worth the trip if you want Vietnamese contemporary art in its rawest state, before the museum frame goes on and while the studio traces are still visible. Tây Hồ is about twenty minutes north of the Old Quarter.
One afternoon by the lake covers both family stories end to end.
