About the event

Eleven folk tales retold through more than 40 illustrations in a heritage setting: if you want to take the kids to the Temple of Literature or revisit Vietnamese fairy tales yourself, this is a good reason to go.

The exhibition "Tiếng Vọng Dân Gian - Kho tàng truyện cổ tích Việt Nam" (Echoing Whispers: A Treasury of Vietnamese Folk Tales) explores the flow of traditional culture, with a special focus on the image and place of women in society.

   At a glance:

  • — 11 folk tales collected and compiled by the late scholar Nguyễn Đổng Chi
  • — More than 40 illustrations by artist Jeet Zdũng
  • — Shown in the Nhà Thái học area, open every day of the week
  • — The exhibition itself is free; visitors buy the regular Temple of Literature admission ticket at the gate, 58 Quốc Tử Giám

The exhibition is part of a project by Major Books to connect Vietnamese culture with international audiences, co-organised with Studio ARTiculate. The organisers say a series of satellite events will be announced soon.

"Fairy tales cannot save people from conflict, but they have persistently outlived conflicts," the Major Books team writes.

Which tale from your childhood will you look for first?
