Exhibition «Inside The Landscape»

   A block of wood is cut, hollowed and opened until a human form emerges from it - that is how Japanese sculptor Katsumi Mukai works with material. "Inside The Landscape" brings together his wood sculptures and pencil drawings at Sóng Mây Gallery.S in Hanoi.

   For Mukai, wood sculpture and drawing on paper are not separate pursuits: both are ways of exploring existence, movement and the states of nature. Alongside pencil portraits built from continuous lines, the wood pieces in this show largely evoke people and family - some standing alone, others gathered into groups. It's his return to this gallery following the 2024 show "Movement in Silence", this time on a more modest scale.

   Worth a visit for anyone interested in contemporary sculpture or Japanese art, and for anyone curious how a still block of wood can still carry movement inside it. If you saw Mukai's 2024 exhibition, this is a chance to meet another side of his practice.
