   Hanoi craft is usually told as a story about the past: villages, inherited patterns, the same souvenirs on the same shelves. On Tràng Tiền the city tries the opposite order — putting the artisan's hand into today's visual language, at an address you walk past constantly and rarely step into.

   This space is one half of a pair that opens on the same day on the same street. The other half, at the exhibition centre 45 Tràng Tiền, is given to creative products from the traditional craft villages. The daily Thể thao và Văn hóa describes the two together as a route linking heritage value to contemporary creation, and the two addresses stand a few dozen steps apart.

   Both belong to the cultural programme announced by the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism for the 81st National Day, and both run for three weeks — far longer than most holiday events, which are packed into two or three days.

   Who it is for: designers and applied-art people hunting for local material and technique; visitors who want a gift that is not mass-produced; and families who want children to see craft outside a museum vitrine. Because the space stays open into mid-September, you do not have to squeeze in during the crowded holiday days.

   To be straight with you: the list of makers, the opening hours and the admission conditions are not in the city announcement. We leave the unknown as unknown rather than guess, and suggest checking on site.

   A slow walk down Tràng Tiền on an ordinary afternoon is the most comfortable way to see it: two spaces, one street, and plenty worth a second look.
