Programme «Nét chữ An Nhiên» (Serene Strokes)

About the event

Watch a brushstroke come into being from start to finish, in the very courtyard where the scholarly tradition of Thăng Long has been kept for nearly a thousand years. Five days open to the public, with calligraphers working in front of you and traditional music running alongside.

The programme is organised by the Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám Centre for Cultural and Scientific Activities and sits within the second Festival Thăng Long – Hà Nội. It presents Hán Nôm calligraphy and Quốc ngữ calligraphy side by side, combining live writing and conversation with performances of Vietnamese folk music.

In Vietnamese tradition, writing is not merely a way of recording language: it is tied to knowledge, learning, character and inner life. Calligraphy is therefore not just shaping forms out of characters. It is where technique, aesthetics, thought and the writer's own self-cultivation meet. The title points to a state of calm, unhurried inwardness built out of concentration, patience and practice.

   What happens in the space:

  • — practitioners writing live on a range of materials and objects
  • — the whole process visible, from choosing the characters to composition and each gesture
  • — Hán Nôm and Quốc ngữ calligraphy placed next to each other so the difference shows
  • — open conversation between the calligraphers and visitors

It is open to residents and to Vietnamese and international visitors alike, and works well for families whose children are learning to write. The centre's director, Lê Xuân Kiêu, stressed that the programme is not only about admiring a beautiful character or a beautiful stroke, but above all about the training behind it: «A character with spirit lies not only in technique but in the state of mind of the person writing it».

The venue is the Heritage Experience Zone inside the monument grounds, so enter by the main gate and ask for that zone.

Through the act of writing, calligraphy opens a pause inside modern life, and that pause is the part worth carrying back out of the gate.
