Lacquer exhibition «Nguyên – Lãng Du Cùng Sơn» (Wandering with Lacquer)

   Eight artists, one medium: the exhibition «Nguyên – Lãng Du Cùng Sơn» («Wandering with Lacquer») at the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum shows different creative worlds built on the same foundation of Vietnamese lacquer.

   The artists: Nguyễn Văn Bảng, Nguyễn Thị Tiến, Bùi Thị Mừng, Hoàng Ngọc Nhung, Nguyễn Thuỳ Dương, Cao Phương Thảo, Nguyễn Đình Văn and Lily Lai.

   Subjects range from landscapes, flowers and still life to portraits, spiritual imagery and inward-looking works. Alongside the familiar vermilion, black, cockroach-wing brown, gold and silver, blues, purples, oranges and pinks open up new expressive possibilities for today's artists.

   A special touch: an area where visitors can touch lacquer samples at each stage — from a rough surface, through a sanded but still coarse layer, to the smoothness of a finished piece — to sense the labour behind each painting. For Nguyên, the show is the start of a journey connecting traditional lacquer with the public.
