National Day (Sept 2) art programme

   Once a year the island that lives off its sunsets turns the other way and looks up: the seafront at Dương Đông becomes the place to be, and half the town walks down there for the evening. If you are on Phu Quoc in early September, keep that evening free — the railings above the water fill up long before dark.

   This year Vietnam marks the 81st anniversary of its independence. The island does not set the programme itself: since the 2025 reform Phu Quoc has been a special zone (đặc khu) inside An Giang province, and the provincial culture and sports department draws up the holiday plans. There is a precedent to go by — for the last Lunar New Year the province ran fireworks at four locations at once, and Phu Quoc was one of them.

   Here is how the island handled its most recent big fireworks night:

• — the stage and the launch point were set up in Dương Đông, by the international passenger pier;
• — Trần Phú street was closed to traffic between the Cách Mạng Tháng Tám and Mạc Cửu junctions, along with the park on the old airfield, from 5.30pm to 10pm;
• — it was all free: no tickets are sold and no spots on the waterfront are reserved.

   The evening suits families and anyone who would rather not spend it in a taxi. Dương Đông is the island's main town on the west coast, and its hotels, cafés and fishing harbour are all within walking distance of one another. The Dinh Cau night market on Lê Thị Hồng Gấm street sits a few hundred metres from the river mouth, so the fireworks fold into the walk you would have taken anyway.

   The river mouth is the island's landmark. Dinh Cau shrine stands on a rock shelf right where the Dương Đông River meets the sea: twenty-nine stone steps lead up to it, the present building dates from 1937, and it honours Cậu Tài and Cậu Quý, the guardians local fishermen turn to before heading into the Gulf of Thailand. The anchorage below is older than it looks — the French opened Dương Đông to foreign shipping on 25 May 1874.

   The date belongs to the whole country: on 2 September 1945 Hồ Chí Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Đình Square in Hanoi, weeks after the August Revolution (Cách mạng Tháng Tám) had moved through the cities from north to south. Since then it has been marked everywhere — parades in the capital, evening concerts and fireworks on the islands.

   Two practical notes. The province publishes the 2026 programme close to the date, so check the exact hour and location in late August. And do not confuse this with the show at Sunset Town, at the southern tip of the island — different event, different end of Phu Quoc. Fireworks there go off every evening inside two ticketed Sun World shows, «Symphony of the Sea» at 19:45 and «Kiss of the Sea» at 21:00; on 2 September they add a separate five-minute display with the national flag on the water screen, right after «Kiss of the Sea». Getting in, though, requires a Sun World ticket, while the fireworks at Dương Đông are watched free from the embankment.

   Get there while it is still light, take a place by the water and wait for the dark. On Phu Quoc the national holiday comes with the surf underneath it, and that is a better reason to be in town on 2 September than staying by the pool.
