About the event

Five evenings of Argentine tango with partners from sixteen countries, all inside one city — that is what the marathon format buys you. Milongas run in four-hour blocks, guest DJs take turns at the console, and the floor reshuffles with every tanda. By 12 August the organisers counted more than 160 registered dancers from 16 countries, with leaders and followers split evenly — the kind of balance that keeps you on the floor instead of along the wall.

The organisers sum their programme up as 42 hours of tango, nine international DJs and one championship; the official schedule splits the milongas into eight blocks from Thursday to Monday. The line-up runs from Tu Duong (Vietnam) and Shuting Zhang (China) to Ivo Bertino (Italy), Yoga Magdalena (Germany and Poland), Lino Rivas, Diego Ki and Bum (Korea) and Midori Asai (Japan); the dancers themselves are travelling in from Argentina, Norway, Belgium, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan and a dozen countries more.

The marathon uses three venues and runs day by day:

  • 1 October, Miss Saigon Tango (85 Nguyễn Hữu Cầu, Phường Tân Định): a free class and the pre-marathon milonga.
  • 2–4 October, Kingdom Dance studio: the main venue of the marathon, six milongas back to back.
  • 3 October, daytime: a Mekong and city tour for participants, followed in the evening by Rodrigo & Midori from Japan and group performances.
  • 4 October, 10:00–16:00: the Vietnam International Tango Championship, with Diego Xen on music.
  • 5 October, Flora Tango Club (84A Nguyễn Cửu Vân, Phường Gia Định): the farewell milonga and a free class.

The championship runs eight categories: Tango de Pista, Escenario, Milonga, Vals, Senior Tango, Senior Vals and two Jack & Jill draws. Entry is about 1,050,000 VND ($40) per category per couple and 520,000 VND ($20) per person for Jack & Jill, and it is free for full-package holders who sign up in advance — that registration opens on 5 September. Every marathon participant is also given a personal number; 001 to 144 had been issued by early August.

This is an event built for dancers rather than an audience: milongas fill most of the schedule, and the couple and group performances from Korea and Japan sit in the breaks between blocks. Passes are sold by the day at different prices, while the full package covers the whole marathon and the championship categories. For registration questions the organisers reply by page message and at [email protected].

Bring shoes you can afford to wear out and plan your sleep around the milongas — five days pass faster than you expect.
