Ballet screening «Alice's Adventures in Wonderland»

#screening#ballet#Royal Ballet#Alice in Wonderland#Saigon

About the event

A Friday evening following Alice down the rabbit hole — not on the page, but through a recording of the Royal Ballet's production, screened in a reading space in central Saigon. If you love ballet but rarely get to Covent Garden, here is a chance to see it without leaving the city.

The screening is put on by Saigon Classical with support from Paper & I, under licence from Naxos Deutschland GmbH, as part of From Alpha to Opera, a project that introduces famous operas with Vietnamese and English subtitles. The work is "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon to music by Joby Talbot and performed by The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London.

As the organisers describe it, the ballet burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive choreography; Joby Talbot's score mixes contemporary sound worlds with sweeping melodies that nod to 19th-century ballet, and Bob Crowley's designs use everything from puppetry to projections. It opens at a garden party where Alice sees her parents' friend Lewis Carroll turn into a white rabbit; following him down the hole, she meets countless strange creatures and the charming Knave of Hearts, on the run for stealing the tarts.

It is for ballet lovers, families with children aged 6 and up, and anyone after a gentle cultural evening at the end of the week.

The suggested donation starts at 300,000 VND, paid by bank transfer when you register online; one registration covers one person and is non-refundable if you do not attend. Donations cover preparation, equipment, the screening licence and the VĨNH-LẠC podcast series, and guests are encouraged to order drinks on site. The screening is not suitable for children under 6. As of 8 October, all places on the registration page are taken.

It takes place in The Lighthouse reading space on the first floor of Paper & I; doors open at 18:00.

See you at the rabbit hole — it only gets curiouser from here.
