SportsIn Hanoi you usually meet tai chi at dawn by a lake: a handful of people moving slowly, no audience, no music. Once a year that practice moves indoors into a full-size arena, where clubs gather, show their own forms and then line up together. You get to see what the familiar park exercise looks like when it is collected into one hall.
«Ngày Thái cực quyền Việt Nam» means Vietnam Tai Chi Day, and 2026 is its third edition. The first one carried the full title «Ngày Thái cực quyền Việt Nam – Vì sức khỏe cộng đồng», for the health of the community, and that framing still holds: this is a gathering of practitioners rather than a tournament with brackets and scores. Tai chi itself has been on the UNESCO representative list of intangible cultural heritage since December 2020.
The programme in short
Biểu diễn — demonstration routines by individual clubs and masters
Đồng diễn — the mass routine, with the whole floor moving as one
Vinh danh — the honouring ceremony that closes the morning
You do not need to practise to enjoy it. If you are new to Vietnam, this is the one place where you can see what is usually scattered across morning parks: which forms the clubs actually train, how their styles differ, and why the discipline holds so many older people. Anyone looking for gentle movement for themselves or for a parent can meet several clubs in a single visit.
The series is still young. The first edition was held in late October 2024, the second in early November 2025 in Hải Phòng, covered by Nhân Dân, Sức khỏe & Đời sống and Dân Việt. In 2026 it is Hanoi's turn.
The venue has a story of its own. Cung Thể thao Quần Ngựa opened in 2003 with room for roughly 5,000 spectators, and it has hosted the 2003 Southeast Asian Games, the 2009 Asian Indoor Games and the artistic, rhythmic and aerobic gymnastics of SEA Games 31. The name Quần Ngựa is inherited from the colonial-era racecourse that was moved to this part of the city in 1899.
The organisers have not published participation terms — registration, fees or dress requirements. The event is listed under the club Trần Gia Taiji - Đông Anh.
If you have ever thought about trying tai chi, come and watch it live: this slow art argues better by sight than by explanation.
