Open mic night «Open Mic Open Hearts» at Tranquil

   A stage you can step onto yourself. On Tuesday this book café in an Old Quarter alley gives the evening over to anyone who wants to sing, tell their own story, or simply take a corner and listen to someone else's. There is no sign-up in advance, and listening here is as legitimate as performing.

   Hosts change from week to week (the café names them in its weekly schedule post); they keep the running order and pick up anyone stepping up for the first time. The café puts the format plainly: an open stage for anyone carrying a heart that loves music. Entry is free, and the organisers tag the evening as such.

   Tranquil has been running since July 2015 and marked ten years in July 2025. The founders took the name from the dictionary: tranquil means free from disturbance, and they treat that definition as a working principle. The place is deliberately hidden, with a signboard the size of a palm, an entrance off an alley, and rooms across two levels with a mezzanine and shelves of books in Vietnamese and English.

   The evening is worth attention to two different people. Anyone who plays or sings and wants a live audience without auditions or a rider. And anyone who simply wants an evening in a room where the music happens by itself rather than to a programme: the repertoire is unknown in advance because it depends on who turns up.

   The room is small and split across several spaces on two levels, so you can listen well away from the stage, among the bookshelves.

   An open mic is the most honest musical format there is: nobody knows how the evening ends, the hosts included.
