MusicalEvery few months Hanoi's music lovers — most of them Japanese residents of the city — take over the stage of a small live house and play straight through the day: J-pop, anime songs, Western rock, punk, fusion. There are no famous names on the bill, but there is something rarer: a room where the audience and the bands are the same people.
The festival is run by Hanoi Enthusiastic Club Band (河内熱饗音楽隊), a circle of amateur musicians formed in Hanoi in 2007. It has kept going on monthly meet-ups and three or four big shows a year, and the October gathering will be its 47th. The arc is easy to trace: in October 2016 the 23rd edition filled the O'Learys bar with eight bands, and by the 46th, in June 2026, eleven line-ups took the Polygon Musik stage, running from J-pop and anime songs to Western rock, punk and mixture.
The short version:
Come alone, with family or with friends: the organisers make a point of saying that newcomers slot in easily, that the circle stays open and that anyone who wants to pick up an instrument again is welcome at the meet-ups. If you have been looking for a way to spend a Sunday in Hanoi and prefer the raw sound of a small room to stadium lighting, this is your kind of day.
The venue carries part of the story. Polygon Musik sits inside Complex 01, a community mall rebuilt from an industrial factory close to half a century old. Shops, cafes, workshops and event spaces now share one roof, and community groups around music, cinema and architecture meet there regularly. Allow a minute to find the entrance: the complex hides in a lane behind the buildings on Tây Sơn and is invisible from the street.
On language: the poster is in English and the organisers' announcements come out in Japanese, but the substance of the day is music — past editions leaned on Japanese and English-language songs, and you do not need to follow the words to be part of it.
Bring along anyone who used to play in a band and has not touched an instrument in years, because days like this tend to send people back to the stage.
