About the event

Some nights you go out to hear a particular song. Other nights it is enough to sit in front of a voice you like and let it work. On a Friday night in Hanoi, in a live-music tea room where the tables reach the stage, that second kind of evening is laid out plainly.

   In brief:

  • — headliner Phuong Linh (Phương Linh), a soft, bright voice with unusual care for the words
  • — live backing by Band Space
  • — backing vocals from the Tuti group
  • — guests sit at tables, the sound is fully live, seats go by advance booking

Hers is a voice you recognise immediately, and it never needs volume to hold a room. She sings love songs with a femininity of her own: gentle in one line, aching in the next, with a flash of graceful pride after that. The feeling is always kept in proportion, so the song keeps room to breathe and the listener keeps room to react. Part of the appeal sits between the songs too — a little mischief in how she talks to the room, a little wit in the pauses.

The evening suits you if you like lyrical Vietnamese repertoire, want to hear every line in a room small enough for it, or simply want a light close to the working week. The songs are sung in Vietnamese.

The room matters here as much as the set. Trixie Cafe & Lounge in Đống Đa, a short taxi ride southwest of Hoàn Kiếm lake, has been running minishows by Vietnamese singers for years, hosting Đàm Vĩnh Hưng, Mỹ Tâm, Noo Phước Thịnh and Vũ Cát Tường on the same small stage. By day it is a garden cafe; by night it turns into a tea room with live sound.

The venue has not announced a price for the night: its listing gives neither an entry fee nor a table surcharge, so ask about the terms when you reserve a seat.

The room is close enough to catch every line and every smile, which is exactly how this particular charm is best taken in.
