Minishow «Myra Trần»

   A voice can carry a ballad up to its full height and then move into a modern groove without losing its grip. On a Saturday night in Hanoi, in a live-music tea room with the stage a few steps from the tables, both of those colours sit side by side.

   Her career has never been a single colour. After years on larger stages she has taken visibly more control over what she sings and how she is presented. The voice is the thing: heavy enough to hold a ballad together, flexible enough to switch into rhythm-driven contemporary material. From four metres away, that switch is far more audible than on any recording.

   The evening suits you if you like powerful singing, want both love songs and younger, beat-driven material in one night, or expect to find more in this performer than the ballads she became known for. The songs are sung in Vietnamese.

   The room matters here as much as the set. Trixie Cafe & Lounge in Đống Đa, a short taxi ride southwest of Hoàn Kiếm lake, has been running minishows by Vietnamese singers for years, hosting Đàm Vĩnh Hưng, Mỹ Tâm, Hồ Ngọc Hà and Vũ Cát Tường on the same small stage. By day it is a garden cafe; by night it turns into a tea room with live sound.

   The venue has not announced a price for the night: its listing gives neither an entry fee nor a table surcharge, so ask about the terms when you reserve a seat.

   If you want a night that has both vocal weight and young stage energy, this one is worth the trip across town.
