Culture and ArtsShakespeare here does not happen on a stage in front of you, it happens around you. The feud of two households is transplanted into today's Vietnam and turned into a question about what a person inherits and what they still get to build. The industrial halls of an independent Hanoi theatre work as a set that is assembled and taken apart while you watch.
The order of the names is deliberate: Juliet comes first. The classic story moves into a contemporary Vietnam where tradition, family, identity and rapid change collide, and the production asks what stands between people before they can truly meet — family, generations, inherited identities, the expectations of society. The company puts it in two lines: «We inherit the past. We build the future».
A few things that set the evening apart from an ordinary night at the theatre:
Go if you know the play from school and want to hear it in Vietnamese material; if you have never been to Hanoi's independent theatre scene and want an easier way in than a big academic stage; and if you have a teenager at home, because the organiser sets the bar at 11 and over.
Behind the production stands ATELIER Theater de Hanoi, an independent company working since 2014. It has run the Performing Arts Spring Festival, known as P.A.S, and the project “Theater: Interpret and Act”, and in 2020 it was among the nominees for Hanoi Grapevine's Finest in the organisers category. In spring 2026 the team announced a fundraising campaign for a new permanent home for independent live arts: by its own account, its previous space was due for demolition. Building, dismantling and rebuilding is more than a stage metaphor here.
The performance is in Vietnamese, with a scene-by-scene text in English available throughout, so the plot stays easy to follow without the language.
The run is grouped into three weekends. Fridays and Saturdays, that is 11 and 12, 25 and 26 September, 9 and 10 October, start at 20:00. Sundays, that is 13 and 27 September and 11 October, start three hours earlier, at 17:00.
If you had filed Shakespeare away as velvet and footlights, this Hanoi autumn offers another version: oil drums, scaffolding and a story that keeps happening.
