About the event

Three nights a week, Da Nang's landmark bridge comes alive: the head of a steel dragon arching over the Han River (Hàn) breathes fire, then drenches the riverbank in a cloud of mist. Thousands of people turn up every weekend for a show that lasts only minutes, so if you are in town between Friday and Sunday, plan your evening around the dragon.

Dragon Bridge (Cầu Rồng) is no mere ornament but a working crossing: 666.5 meters long, nearly 9,000 metric tons, six traffic lanes, five spans and two pedestrian paths. Its shape follows a Lý-dynasty dragon curving over the river and reaching toward the sea, and the bridge links the airport with the city's beaches. Construction began in 2009 and took almost four years; the bridge opened on March 29, 2013.

According to the city's official tourism portal, this is how the show works:
— by design, the dragon breathes fire for two minutes, then water for three
— instead of a solid jet, it releases a powerful stream of water vapor at 1,944 liters per second
— a single three-minute burst uses 20 cubic meters of water and 40 kWh of electricity
— to make it happen, the structure holds a 20-cubic-meter water tank and 325 cubic meters of compressed air

It works for everyone: families, travelers with just a couple of days in Da Nang and night photographers. In September 2026, Lonely Planet built Dragon Bridge into its three-day weekend itinerary for Da Nang: mì Quảng noodles in the morning, the Ba Na Hills (Bà Nà) in the afternoon and, after dark, the Son Tra Night Market (Sơn Trà), where the crowd gathers to wait for the dragon.

Regular shows run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at around 21:00. Holidays bring extra nights: over Tết 2026 the dragon performed ten nights in a row and for National Day six, with the National Day extras approved separately by the city People's Committee. The tourism portal notes that the schedule may be expanded during festivals and major city events, so check the latest announcements in holiday weeks.

There are no tickets: you can watch for free from the sidewalks, parks and squares by the river or from the bridge itself. The closest view of the dragon's head is on the east bank, along Trần Hưng Đạo Street; arrive 30 to 45 minutes early and expect some spray. The whole bridge, with the city lights behind it, is best seen from the west bank on Bạch Đằng Street. There is also a paid option, a river cruise, which needs to be booked in advance.

Get to the river early, grab a spot by the water and wait for the dragon over the Han to wake up at around 21:00.
