About the event

At dawn on Saturdays, đờn ca tài tử drifts from the roof of a boat in the middle of Cai Rang Floating Market (Cái Răng) in Can Tho (Cần Thơ). This chamber music of southern Vietnam was inscribed by UNESCO on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. If you are heading to the market early, make it a Saturday: alongside the boats laden with fruit and vegetables, you get a live concert on the water.

The Can Tho City Culture and Arts Center (Trung tâm Văn hóa, Nghệ thuật TP Cần Thơ) launched the series on 29 August 2026. The music comes from the center's own troupe, Đoàn Nghệ thuật, Cải lương Tây Đô, and there is no stage as such: the artists sit on the roof of a ghe bầu boat among the trading vessels, and tour boats pull up alongside to listen. The performance lasts about an hour, and its introduction has been recorded in Vietnamese and English for foreign visitors.

According to the newspaper Báo Văn Hóa, the program is built on:
— ca ra bộ, singing with acted gestures
— the «20 bài bản Tổ»
— vọng cổ in its nhịp 8, 16 and 32 forms
— cải lương pieces and songs promoting Can Tho, older works alongside new ones

The «20 bài bản Tổ» are the twenty basic pieces on which đờn ca tài tử was originally played and sung, grouped by season, from the six cheerful spring bài Bắc to the four mournful winter bài Oán. Vọng cổ is a hugely popular tune across the Mekong Delta and one of the mainstays of cải lương.

A recent Báo Cần Thơ report named the singers Linh Sang, Le Duy (Lê Duy), Hong Thuy (Hồng Thủy), Thuy Trang (Thùy Trang) and Vo Vu Linh (Võ Vũ Linh). They are accompanied by the đàn kìm lute and the ghi-ta phím lõm, a guitar with scalloped frets carved out so that it sounds like a Vietnamese instrument, which in time took the place of the single-string đàn bầu in đờn ca tài tử ensembles.

It is worth catching if you go to the market for the atmosphere: the morning trade comes with music that southerners have long played at festivals, after the harvest and on moonlit nights. Foreign visitors, Báo Cần Thơ writes, do not just listen from their boats but climb aboard to chat with the musicians and take photos, and a young French couple in the report even tried their hand as performers, joining the ensemble.

To see the performance you need to be on the water: boats to the market leave from Ninh Kieu Wharf (Bến Ninh Kiều), about 5 km away, and from An Bình market. The market itself gathers from 2–3 am and is busiest between 4 and 6 am. Look for the ghe bầu boat with the program's banner. The Saturday 6 am performances are planned until the end of the year; on Sunday mornings, under the plan, another group, the Cái Răng ward community services center (Trung tâm Dịch vụ cộng đồng phường Cái Răng), performs at the market in rotation, but no time has been announced for those shows.

Set your alarm early: at six on Saturday morning, Cai Rang greets the sunrise with đờn ca tài tử.
