About the event

   The Mekong Delta knows how to celebrate loudly, and nowhere more so than among the Southern Khmer — a people with their own language, Buddhist monasteries and age-old moon rituals. Each autumn the riverbanks in Sóc Trăng fill with the thunder of drums as dozens of long, hand-painted dragon boats line up on the water, while thousands of spectators claim both banks long before the first heats.

   In brief:

  • long-boat races (đua ghe Ngo) — rowing crews representing Buddhist monasteries;
  • floating lantern release on the river (thả đèn nước);
  • traditional Khmer costume show;
  • Khmer cuisine festival — the flavours of the south in one place;
  • folk contests, games and craft fairs.

   At its heart lies Oóc Om Bóc, a rite of moon worship and thanksgiving for the rice harvest, held on the full moon of the tenth lunar month, usually in the second half of November. The soul of the event is đua ghe Ngo: each boat is built and kept by its own monastery, and winning is a matter of pride for the entire community. After dark, glowing lantern-rafts are set onto the water and the river turns into a ribbon of light. Beyond the racing, the programme brings costume shows, a Khmer food festival and craft fairs, so the riverside easily fills a whole day.

   The Khmer are an indigenous people of Southern Vietnam, culturally close to Cambodia, and their moon feast sits somewhere between a sporting carnival and a great farmers' thanksgiving. Locals arrive in whole families, and visitors have it easy: watching the races, tasting street food and photographing the lanterns all happen right from the embankment. This is the largest cultural event of the Mekong Delta — a rare chance to witness a living tradition rather than a staged reconstruction.

   Come down to the river — for the drums, the boats and a stream of light.
