About the event

   Spend an evening inside Vietnam's first imperial capital and watch a whole era come back to life under the night sky of Hoa Lư. On a floating stage set among the recreated streets of the ancient town, battle scenes, fire and fireworks turn history into a spectacle you can follow even if the names are new to you.

   This is not an indoor play but a large open-air «thực cảnh» (live-action) production, staged right among the scenery rather than on a theatre stage. What to expect:

  • a water stage (sân khấu thủy đình) framed by the reconstructed quarters of old Hoa Lư;
  • dozens of actors and extras — cavalry, foot «armies», court scenes;
  • modern light and sound, smoke, real fire, pyrotechnics and fireworks;
  • an evening format that plays like a historical film come to life.

   The hero is Đinh Bộ Lĩnh, who grew up in this very area. As a boy, so the story goes, he led village children in mock battles under flags of reed grass — «cờ lau», which gives the show its name. In the 10th century, after long centuries under Chinese rule, the country had broken apart into the domains of twelve warlords (loạn 12 sứ quân). Đinh Bộ Lĩnh defeated his rivals and in 968 united the land, founding the state of Đại Cồ Việt with its capital at Hoa Lư — the first truly independent Vietnamese kingdom, with him as its first emperor.

   It fits naturally into a Ninh Bình itinerary: if you spend the day on a boat through Tràng An or Tam Cốc and walking around ancient Hoa Lư, the show is an easy evening addition — no long transfers, just steps from the province's main sights. History lovers, families and curious travellers will all find something here.

   The show is performed in Vietnamese, but you hardly need the dialogue: the story is historical and told above all through action — the battles, lighting, fire and pyrotechnics need no translation.

   Tickets run from 150,000 to 250,000 VND depending on your seat — a fair price for an open-air evening that doubles as a history lesson. If you want to leave Ninh Bình with more than photos of limestone karsts, this one is worth the trip — tickets on ticketbox.vn.
