Talk «Ca dao xứ sở» (Folk Songs of the Homeland) — Session 3

About the event

Vietnamese families rarely teach right and wrong in a lecture. The rules about how to treat people, what is owed to whom and where a line sits are carried in short rhymed couplets that sound light and have outlasted several generations. The closing evening of a three-part conversation series on folk verse and proverbs takes that layer apart, in a small reading room in central Ho Chi Minh City.

The full name of the series is «Ca dao xứ sở — Nhớ người xưa từng ở nơi này», roughly "folk songs of the homeland: remembering the people who once lived here". It is run by Năm Năm Tháng Tháng with Tempo Nexus and led by Thạc sĩ Kiến Nam. The organisers announced this session under the theme «Moral Principles and Righteous Conduct». Three sessions, three separate subjects rather than one evening repeated:

  • — Session 1: romantic love and marital devotion — 16 August 2026
  • — Session 2: songs of labour and the love of life — 20 September 2026
  • — Session 3: moral principles and righteous conduct — the evening described here

It suits readers finding their way into Vietnamese literature, folklore researchers, literature students, and residents who would like to know why a piece of family advice arrives as a rhymed line instead of a plain sentence. No preparation is expected: you sit and listen while the verses are read aloud and taken apart rather than summarised.

The room is half the reason to come. Tempo Nexus is a 40 m² reading room inside the Lê Ngọc apartment block, converted by the architects of k59 atelier and finished in 2025: patterned cement floor tiles that had been covered for years were uncovered again, and the old wrought-iron grilles were kept rather than replaced. It is apartment 306, inside the block itself rather than a shopfront on the street. The series poster carries «Cô gái bên cửa sổ», a painting by Mai Trung Thứ.

The organisers have published the theme of this third session but no detailed programme, and have said nothing about a fee. The material is Vietnamese folk verse and proverbs; the poster and every announcement from the organisers are in Vietnamese, and no translation or subtitles have been mentioned. Forty square metres do not hold many chairs, so register ahead through the organisers' form. Take a seat while there are still seats to take.
