Stand-up Night «Dờm»

«Dờm» is what Vietnamese speakers blurt out when something in front of them tilts away from the ordinary. Ngoc Minh took that word for the title of his solo night and keeps to its spirit throughout: noticing things so everyday that nobody looks at them, then talking about them until the room realises they are genuinely funny.

His material comes from his own life — a man from central Vietnam living far from home, a son, an office worker, someone who pays more attention to what he eats than is strictly reasonable. The language is unwrapped: coarse, but honest. Much of it is too private to surface on any other stage.

Sharing the bill are Hao Hoa, whose comedy leans reflective, and Lac Vu Thien, working in what the club plainly calls WTF comedy — three different storytelling voices in one evening. The night is produced by Huhu Comedy Club, one of the groups building a stand-up scene in Ho Chi Minh City.

Stand-up in Vietnam is still young compared with spoken drama or televised sketch comedy: most of it happens in small rooms of a few dozen seats, with the performer standing a couple of steps from the audience. That closeness is the form — there is no barrier to hide behind.

The venue is Tipsy Art on Nguyen Canh Chan street in the Cau Ong Lanh area of District 1. Seats are limited, so booking ahead is required.

The material is intended for adult audiences: direct language and subjects the performers do not soften.
