MusicalSome performers refuse to settle into a single format, and that is exactly what makes their concerts unpredictable in the best sense. On a Saturday night in Hanoi, in a live-music tea room where the stage is a few steps from the tables, the room belongs to a singer who has spent nearly two decades trying new things.
In brief:
Audiences first knew him as a bright young voice with easy energy; the artist on stage now has far more layers. He sings, writes and performs, and keeps looking for new ways to tell his own story. His sets can change colour quickly, moving from a quiet, emotional passage to the high-energy delivery that has always been his signature — and at a few metres away, that shift is something you watch happen rather than hear reported.
The evening suits you if you like live music with a strong stage personality, want to watch a performer close enough to see how he shapes a song, or simply want a weekend night unlike the others. The songs are sung in Vietnamese.
The room matters here as much as the set. Trixie Cafe & Lounge in Đống Đa, a short ride west of the Old Quarter, has been running minishows by Vietnamese singers for years, hosting Đàm Vĩnh Hưng, Mỹ Tâm, Tuấn Hưng and Duy Mạnh on the same small stage. By day it is a garden cafe; by night it turns into a tea room with live sound.
The venue has not announced a price for the night: its listing gives neither an entry fee nor a table surcharge, so ask about the terms when you reserve a seat.
What makes this minishow worth the trip is not the setlist alone, but the chance to meet the performer he is now: steadier after years of work, still curious, still unwilling to repeat himself.
