Experimental music concert «Music for the House»

About the event

Here the sound comes not only from the performers but from the space itself: this evening at Anatolia, a traditional house with a garden in Hanoi's Ngọc Thụy, is conceived as an act of listening together. German experimental musician Dietmar Gubin brings his PSON project to Hanoi and plays alongside two Vietnamese musicians.

   Three practices share the evening:

  • — PSON (Particles in the Spectrum Of Noise) — Dietmar Gubin's project, moving between live electronics, musique concrète, minimal electronic music and sound sculpture; its focus is not music as an object but the listener's experience of sound, space and vibration
  • — Nguyen Nhat Minh (Nguyễn Nhật Minh) — a Hanoi composer and pianist, classically trained at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, who combines piano, synthesizers and electronic sound; his «Cu M'gar» carries sounds recorded on a journey through Đắk Lắk
  • — Quy Trong Do (Quý Trong Do) — a visual artist and musician working with experimental sound, modular synthesis, self-built electronic systems and audio-visual performance

According to the organisers, Gubin has been working with experimental and electronic music for around four decades. The announcement for his April show at Raststätte in Aachen, Germany, notes that since the 1990s he has performed at art events including the MKH Biennale in Halberstadt, and that his approach was shaped by Albert Camus and by John Cage's ASLSP, the organ piece whose performance there is stretched over 639 years.

Nguyen Nhat Minh releases on the Hanoi label Thang Long Records, and his new album comes out there on 26 September, just days after this concert.

The evening is for listeners of ambient, experimental electronics and sound art who want to hear Hanoi's independent scene side by side with a guest from Germany.

Anatolia is a traditional house with a garden across the Red River from central Hanoi; its «Live at Anatolia» nights have ranged from jazz and free improvisation to the đàn bầu and đàn tranh, Vietnamese string instruments.

Seating is limited, so the organisers ask you to reserve in advance by message on Anatolia's page or by the phone number on this card. Drinks and snacks are available at the bar.

Bring your curiosity and your attention: the musicians and the house will do the rest.
