Workshop «Reading Film Design #1» (contemporary Korean cinema)

The semi-basement flat in «Parasite», the train carriages of «Train to Busan»: an afternoon spent reading Korean films through their sets, objects and every room in the frame. Cây Khế Art Lab in Hanoi opens Reading Film Design, a workshop series on production design for cinema.

Production design is one of the three roles that shape how a film looks, yet it still gets relatively little research and discussion in Vietnam. The series was set up to share knowledge of film design and connect film lovers on an entirely non-commercial basis. The guest expert is Nguyễn Nguyên Vũ (M.A., Meritorious Artist), deputy head of the Department of Theatre and Film Design at the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema.

Three films are on the table: «Train to Busan» (2016), «Parasite» (2019) and «Decision to Leave» (2022). The three hours cover:
— an overview of contemporary Korean cinema and the role of production design
— discussion of design in the three films: narrative, visual language, links with cinematography, lighting and acting, historical, social and cultural context and style
— group work: a set design concept exercise

It is open to anyone aged 18 and over, and especially suits students and people working in the creative industries who want to watch films the way designers do.

The fee includes light snacks, one drink of your choice and the art supplies for the group exercise. The registration form closes automatically once places are filled.

See you, fellow film lovers, on an October afternoon at Cây Khế Art Lab.
