Culture and ArtsA public holiday in Hanoi does not have to be spent standing in a street crowd. On 2 September the city drops admission charges at every paid museum, monument and heritage site it runs, and the concession lasts exactly one day.
The essentials:
The city is looking beyond one holiday. The same document instructs its departments to draft principles, criteria and a standing mechanism for free admission to city-managed sites on national holidays and major occasions, to be completed during 2026. A one-off gesture may well turn into a rule.
Getting around costs nothing either: from 29 August to 2 September Hanoi waives all bus and metro fares on both urban rail lines, with buses running from 4:30 to 22:30 and more than 17,000 services a day. With parking off the list of worries, you can plan a three or four stop route through the centre and still be back before the fireworks.
Who benefits? Families looking for shade in the early September heat, visitors with a single day in the capital, and anyone who has been putting off a museum because of the queue at the ticket window. Several nearby venues are free anyway during the same days: the photo exhibition «Rạng rỡ non sông Việt Nam» at the 93 Đinh Tiên Hoàng gallery from 28 August to 6 September, the display «Tâm son, chí thép» at the Hỏa Lò Prison site until 5 September, and folk games, craft stalls and music at the Hồ Văn courtyard of Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám from 26 to 30 August.
One honest caveat: so far there is a decision, not an address list. Ask at the ticket desk of the site you are heading for, since the venues keep their normal timetable and the detailed guidance is still to come from the departments.
On 2 September the best of indoor Hanoi opens without a ticket, and the evening brings fireworks over the city - the day rather plans itself.
