About the event

   Hundreds of colourful hoops stretched across the space and out into the garden, and self-rotating lanterns found on Hanoi's own streets: Japanese artist Kito Kengo brings to the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange what the organisers call his first solo exhibition in Vietnam. If you like art you can step into and walk through, this is the exhibition to catch this autumn.

   The exhibition brings together two installations:

  • — a large-scale work in the material that made Kito's name, brightly coloured hula hoops linked together; each hoop reads like a brushstroke on the «canvas» of the space, weaving a web-like composition from one point to the next;
  • — a new work born from his research in Hanoi: walking the city's streets and markets he came across a self-rotating lantern, and with coloured filters and mirrors these lanterns create shifting layers of light, reflection and afterimage.

   Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1977, Kito Kengo studied Western painting at Nagoya University of the Arts and took a master's in oil painting at Kyoto City University of Arts; he is now a professor of contemporary art at the Graduate School of Kyoto University of the Arts. He spent a year in New York in 2008 and moved to Berlin in 2010 on the Agency for Cultural Affairs' programme for young artists. His solo shows include Hara Museum ARC (2017) and Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art (2020).

   It suits contemporary art lovers, families who want their children to play with colour and light, and anyone curious to see a familiar street lantern with new eyes.

   On opening day, 9 October, there is also an art tour (10:00–11:00) and an artist talk (11:00–12:00), both free; the artist talk needs advance registration, which opens at noon on 1 October.

   Programme contacts: Ms. Ngoc (Ngọc), ext. 113, and Ms. Ushio, ext. 160.

   Give the exhibition an afternoon and let the light and colour lead the way.
