About the event

   A Japanese music project brings its whole crew to Vietnam, and the journey starts on Saigon's best known dancefloor during its final weeks of operation. That gives the night two layers: a Japan and Vietnam exchange, and a farewell.

   JAPONISM takes its name from the nineteenth century art movement, when European painting fell for Japanese prints and graphics. The project fuses Japanese art, music and party culture while connecting the creative communities of both countries. After its Tokyo and Nasu editions in May, the series heads to Vietnam for a two-day tour built from three connected parties: it opens in Saigon, then moves to Da Nang for an afternoon beach party and a late night after party.

   The Saigon line-up brings together:

  • Katsu Arai, the figure behind JAPONISM, along with Ku Shin Sai Orchestra, the group he formed with endorphin and Nure Tengu;
  • — Hibiya Line back to back with Dan Lo, two familiar names on the Saigon floor;
  • — Yasmin, Ryoka Ishii, plus Maya and Polana Chundes.

   What sets this edition apart is the room. The Observatory closes its doors in October, so this is almost certainly JAPONISM's last gathering there. For a club that raised much of the city's underground electronic music, every remaining night carries a goodbye in it.

   The Observatory itself is the room most of the city's music collectives have rented out for their own editions, from local crews to international series: last season its terrace was taken over by Japan's Rainbow Disco Club. A Japanese night here is nothing unusual, then — it just happens to coincide with the closing chapter of the space itself.

   The night suits followers of electro and club music, anyone curious how Japanese artists read a Vietnamese dancefloor, and everyone who wants to stand in this space one more time while it is still possible.

   If you ever had a night to remember here, this is your reason to come back.
