Club night «Luu Club: superplasticfantastic, Kophailbui, Brian»

   A night with no script: three selectors, none of them given a set of their own, and the direction decided on the floor. Luu Club keeps making editions like this, where the interesting part is not what gets played but where the night ends up.

   The centre of the line-up is superplasticfantastic, a DJ from Mexico City. Behind the alias is Pedro Ceñal Murga, a founding member of the DJ duo Encarta 97 alongside Rodman. What he brings to Saigon is the side of the Mexican scene the local calendar rarely gets to hear.

   Sharing the booth are Kophailbui and Brian. The organisers describe the selection as a line running from Mexico City and Berlin through to Hanoi and Saigon, and promise seamless movement across house, techno, disco, trance and drum and bass, with no stops at genre borders.

   In practice that means a set built out of hypnotic loops and deep grooves rather than out of hits, so the way to hear it is whole — take it in pieces and the point of such a night is gone.

   Luu Club is the weekend club programme of this neighbourhood bar: midweek it keeps a music schedule for regulars, and by the weekend it turns into a small club running non-commercial electronic music. The venue states a capacity of about a hundred guests and the booth stands a couple of steps from the floor, which makes it the kind of room where a DJ reads the reaction track by track.

   It suits you if you are after a room where the transitions are the interesting part rather than a night with one big name, and if you like music led by several hands and not by a plan. Come once the night is under way, because that is when its direction becomes clear.

   Leave the evening open and simply follow the music — that is the whole idea of this edition.
