Club night «General Levy Live in Saigon»

   One of the most recognisable MC voices in UK jungle returns to Saigon, this time on the stage of a riverside club in Thủ Đức. For drum and bass listeners in Vietnam this is the kind of night that usually requires a flight to another country.

   General Levy has spent decades holding together reggae, dancehall, jungle and drum and bass. His unmistakable vocal style and explosive stage presence made him one of the best known MCs to come out of British soundsystem culture. He is known worldwide above all for Incredible, his track with M-Beat, and he remains a constant live performer at jungle, drum and bass and soundsystem events around the world.

   Support comes from four names: DJ Psycho-UK, Skitty, Mango and Darkus. The night runs on jungle, drum and bass, bass music and British soundsystem energy — fast breakbeats, deep low end and an MC talking directly to the floor.

   If the genre is new to you: jungle emerged in Britain in the early nineties, built on breakbeats pushed to double speed, reggae basslines and an MC riding over the top. Drum and bass is the branch that grew out of it, tighter and heavier. Both came from sound system culture, where the MC leads the room rather than decorating the DJ's set.

   The event is presented by Scientific Sound Asia, a platform that has brought a steady line of drum and bass artists to the city over the past few years. The same promoter hosted General Levy in Saigon in the spring of last year, which makes this a return rather than a debut.

   It suits jungle and drum and bass listeners, anyone drawn to sound system culture, and equally anyone who knows that one famous track but has never seen the man behind it on stage.

   The cheaper ticket allocations are limited, so booking ahead is the safer route.
