Concert «Tháng Năm để lại» (What the Years Left Behind): Võ Lê Vy at Phòng trà Bến Thành

   Some songs only really work when the singer stands a few metres away and nothing sits between the voice and the room. A small hall in central Ho Chi Minh City, a live band and a set drawn from a record its author spent five years finishing — if you like Vietnamese ballads without the arena machinery, that is reason enough to hold a seat.

   The night is named after «Tháng Năm để lại» — roughly, what the passing years leave behind — one of 11 tracks on «Em và 30», the third studio album by Vo Le Vy (Võ Lê Vy). It came out in June 2026 after five years of work with the composer duo Thanh Nghiep (Thành Nghiệp) and Than Sao Mai (Thân Sao Mai). Her earlier records are «Đôi bờ» (2021) and «Võ Lê Vy hát Quốc Bảo – Romances» (2022), the album that got her labelled in the Vietnamese press as the muse of songwriter Quoc Bao (Quốc Bảo).

   She has turned that label down in public: «I hope audiences remember me through my music, not through any title», she told the daily Thanh Nien when the new album appeared.

   Phong tra is a Vietnamese format worth trying once: a music lounge with seated tables and table service, no dance floor, and a stage close enough that the quiet passages still carry. This one sits in the old District 1 core of Saigon, and the tables run from the block right in front of the stage to the balcony and the side rows beside it, where the view is partly blocked and an LED screen fills in.

   The audience for this is anyone who listens to Vietnamese ballads up close: followers of the Quoc Bao songwriting school, listeners who tracked «Em và 30» through its videos, and visitors who have only heard Vietnamese pop in big halls. What you get is a voice without studio polish, including the very quiet notes a mix usually smooths over.

   Seating is by zone, each named after a song: Vội — 350,000 ₫, Đợi — 550,000 ₫, Nụ Trăng Tàn Phai — 750,000 ₫, Quên Em Đi — 950,000 ₫, Tháng Năm Để Lại — 1,250,000 ₫; a basic drink is included. Doors open at 19:00 and the music runs from 20:10 until around 22:30–23:00. The lounge takes reservations through its page inbox and by phone — give your name, phone number, party size and zone. Three house rules are worth knowing: the lounge serves its own food and drinks and does not allow outside ones; a guest who orders nothing pays an 80,000 VND surcharge per person; and a few central seats sit partly behind a column.
