CAM Philharmonic #5: 8 Seconds — Cinematic World

   You know these themes by heart and probably cannot name the people who wrote them. A couple of opening bars and you are back at Hogwarts, in a galaxy far away or out on the sands of Arrakis. Hanoi gets to hear them the way they were scored — a full orchestra and choir in one room, with no screen to watch instead and no compressed file in your headphones.

   The tribute goes to three composers who shaped how cinema sounds: John Williams, Ennio Morricone and Hans Zimmer. The organisers bill it as the first Vietnamese concert to honour all three at once. Expect more than 30 soundtracks drawn from over 20 films — Harry Potter, Star Wars, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Cinema Paradiso, The Mission, Once Upon a Time in the West, Interstellar, Inception and Dune.

   100 performers take the stage, orchestra and choir together, and that is the practical point: the climaxes written for full forces and voices arrive whole, rather than thinned into a chamber arrangement. It suits regular concertgoers and anyone who has never sat through a symphony programme — film music is the shortest way in, and it asks you to know nothing in advance.

   Every generation has its own sound of cinema. Those who grew up in the eighties remember Morricone and «Cinema Paradiso»; the nineties are unimaginable without the «Star Wars» fanfare and the violin from «Schindler's List»; and for anyone now in their twenties the language of film is Zimmer — «Interstellar», «Dune», «The Dark Knight». In this hall all three generations sit side by side, and the recognition hits everyone at once, within the opening bars.

   CAM Philharmonic is young. It formed in 2024 and opened that December with Rock Symphony, rearranging 22 rock hits from five decades for a symphonic line-up. Programmes devoted to Hans Zimmer, in August 2025, and to Joe Hisaishi, the composer behind Studio Ghibli, followed. The ensemble is led by Phạm Xuân Bình Sơn, with Marc Ramírez on the podium for its debut; this is the fifth outing in the series.

   The hall matters too. The National Convention Center went up in 22 months and opened in December 2006 with the APEC summit; its rolling roofline came from a design by German architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Nikolaus Goetze that echoes the seascape of Ha Long Bay. The main auditorium covers 4,256 m² and holds 3,800 — one of the few rooms in the capital deep enough for a hundred performers, and the same one that hosts Party congresses and ASEAN summits. It sits on the western edge of the city, out by the My Dinh stadium complex and a fair way from the Old Quarter — leave extra travel time.

   Film music is built to serve. It holds a scene together, tells you when to brace and when to cry, then leaves with the credits. What it does not do is leave entirely — the theme detaches from the plot and goes on living on its own. A concert hall hands authorship back: what you heard as background turns out to be a score somebody sat down and wrote.

   Practicalities worth knowing: the auditorium is fully seated, tickets are split into five zones by seating position, and the tier you buy decides which merchandise you collect at the exchange desk — the same desk that swaps your e-ticket for the stamped paper ticket you need at the door. Check-in opens at 18:00 and closes at 20:30, after which latecomers may be turned away. Children under 5 are not admitted; anyone aged 6 to 16 needs an adult alongside and a full-price ticket. Professional cameras with detachable lenses, tripods, selfie sticks and drones stay outside, and parking is in the centre's own lots. The same programme then plays two nights in Ho Chi Minh City, on 22 and 23 August at Nhà hát Hoà Bình.

   If you have been meaning to try an orchestra and never found the entry point, start with music you already love. Hanoi gets one night of this before the programme heads south.
