Festival «Đà Nẵng - Thành Phố Học Tập» (Da Nang Learning City)

About the event

   For three days the whole city works as a campus, and the strangest part is that the timetable does not exist before you arrive: the people who come write it. You can open a session of your own, or simply pick where to drop in.

   This is not a one-off. Đà Nẵng - Thành Phố Học Tập is a festival that Vcil Community and Vcil Living Lab - Da Nang run every month, and each edition assembles a completely new programme. The method behind it is Open Space Technology from the Art of Hosting practice: no keynote speaker, no pre-built grid, all content brought by the community. That is why the schedule keeps growing right up to the opening day.

   There are two roles. The flower, or Host, opens a session and chooses its subject; no expertise and no teaching background required. The bee, or Participant, moves between sessions and is free to walk out halfway. The organisers call that right the Law of Mobility: because you may leave, being there becomes a choice.

   What hosts have already put on the board for this edition:

  • — a screening of documentary footage from Ladakh, newly cut by the people who travelled with Vcil Travel School Ladakh 2026, hosted by Nguyễn Thân Thuỳ Linh at DUNE 45;
  • — Taste of Laos, a Lao vegetarian cooking session with Phoutsana, a Lao student living in Vietnam: mushroom larb, spicy stir-fried mushrooms and a Lao-style vegetarian soup, at Vcil Living Lab;
  • — a workshop built on Richard Knowdell's Motivated Skills Card Sort, hosted by Nguyễn Tường Võ, who has spent six years in career guidance with more than 400 young people at VinUni, VNUK-ĐHĐN and Văn Lang University, at the Đà Nẵng General Science Library.

   That last workshop turns on the competency trap: participants sort their own skills into a matrix of proficiency against enjoyment, and see the energy price of being excellent at something they have come to dislike.

   The format suits anyone who finds ordinary courses too narrow: people in the non-profit sector, teachers, parents, students, and expats in Da Nang who want to meet the local community rather than read about it. Hosts come from very different trades, so one afternoon can be a Lao kitchen and a career laboratory at once.

   Worth knowing: every session is booked separately and the groups are tiny, some capped at 10 people and some smaller. The host sets the terms, so a session may be free or run on a voluntary contribution, and one workshop asks you to bring a laptop.

   The idea started in Da Nang and travelled: Vcil members in Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau and Hanoi now run learning festivals of their own.

   A weekend in a city where your teacher may be whoever you meet on the street — pick a couple of sessions and come.
