Festival «Mùa vàng Sa Pa» (Golden Season)

   When rice ripens across the highlands of Lào Cai, the slopes around Sa Pa change colour: tier upon tier of terraces deepens from green to gold and spills down toward the clouds. At dawn the valley glows, and it is these brief harvest weeks that draw travellers up into the far north of Vietnam. The steps have fed the mountain villages for generations and give their fullest colour at harvest.

   In brief:

• golden rice terraces of the Mường Hoa valley and the villages of Tả Van, Mường Bo and Ngũ Chỉ Sơn;
• the «Hương vị trong mây» food week — «Flavours in the clouds» — with highland cooking;
• rituals: the Cấp Sắc of the Dao, Xuống đồng, the going-down to the fields, and Xá Phó ceremonies;

   These terraces were shaped over generations by the H'Mông, Dao, Giáy and Tày, their steps following the mountain and holding water for the rice. At harvest the fields turn into a postcard, yet the gold lasts only a few weeks. The Xuống đồng rite opens work on the fields, the Dao hold the Cấp Sắc initiation, Xá Phó ceremonies sound out, and artisans show hand weaving. At the «Hương vị trong mây» food week you taste the dishes of the mountain peoples, and save the best frame for Fansipan in the clouds.

   For locals it is a harvest celebration and a chance to show their craft; for families, walks among the terraces and a taste of highland food; for visitors, the trail between Tả Van and Mường Bo and the Sa Pa in gold they came to photograph. Note that mùa vàng means «golden season» — named not for autumn leaves but for ripe rice on the mountain steps of the Mường Hoa valley.
