Festival «Thanh trà Huế» (Huế pomelo)

   Some fruit is worth chasing in season and straight to the orchard. Thanh trà pomelo ripens in the gardens along the Hương river, and for three days in Huế you can taste it where it was picked: Thủy Xuân ward opens its garden houses, sets out produce stalls and cooks local dishes from the same fruit. You end up in a working orchard rather than under a fairground tent.

   This is the eighth edition of the festival, and its theme is «Vị ngọt tiến vua» — the sweetness once offered to the king. The ritual part says it plainly: Lễ cáo cung tiến Thanh trà, the offering ceremony, takes place at the communal houses (đình làng) of Nguyệt Biều and Lương Quán. Everything else circles around the same tree, from the display space to the stalls and the kitchen.

   Families travel easily here: folk games and fruit stalls are the simplest way in. Anyone who likes rural markets and regional cooking gets a full row of stalls to work through. If architecture is your reason to come to Huế, the draw is the garden estate itself — a nhà rường is a traditional timber-frame house, a nhà vườn is that house standing inside a fruit garden, and during the festival owners let visitors in and talk about how the trees are tended.

   The festival is not held on a single stage: activities spread across the ward, from the central display area to the gardens and the two communal houses.    The thanh trà season is short. These three days at the end of August are the neatest chance to taste it at the right moment, walk through the gardens of Huế and carry a few fruits home.
