«Điện Huệ Nam» autumn festival 2026

About the event

For three days the Perfume River turns into a processional route: flower-decked boats, banners and people in ceremonial robes moving upstream to a temple built against the hillside. It is the clearest chance in the year to see Hue's Mother Goddess worship where it actually belongs, rather than staged for an audience.

The festival is held twice a year, in the third and seventh lunar months; this autumn session falls on the 8th to 10th days of the seventh lunar month. The core rites begin with the procession of the Holy Mother and attendant deities from the shrine at 352 Chi Lăng, carried both overland and by boat, followed by the announcement rite and the main offering at Điện Huệ Nam and at the Hải Cát village communal house.

What visitors tend to remember is hầu đồng, the spirit-medium ritual, with its hát văn singing — the music, robes and gestures all follow old form. On 10 December 2024 the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism entered the festival in the national list of intangible cultural heritage (decision 3981/QĐ-BVHTTDL); the certificate was handed over at Nghinh Lương Đình on 30 March 2025.

It runs as part of the autumn block of Festival Huế 2026, coordinated by the city Department of Culture and Sports. On 19 August, the day before the rites open, the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre and the Vietnam Institute for Research and Development of Mother Goddess Worship hold an academic conference on managing and safeguarding the festival as heritage in contemporary life. Photographers, anyone drawn to living folk religion, and travellers who want context rather than postcards will get the most out of it.

The temple stands on the riverbank upstream of the city and most people reach it by boat — arrange the trip before you go, not on the day. Entry to Điện Huệ Nam is free from 18 to 22 August, so the usual monument ticket does not apply across the festival days.

If you have three days in Hue in late August, this is the one thing on the calendar you cannot see anywhere else in Vietnam.
