Culture and ArtsThree days before the mid-autumn full moon, Hue's lion dance troupes bring their drums, lion heads and pole-jumping frames to a shared competition floor. This is not the courtesy dance performed outside shops — the teams compete, and you hear the drums several streets away.
The festival runs 18 to 20 September 2026, the 8th to 10th days of the eighth lunar month, organised by the Hue Department of Tourism within the autumn block of Festival Huế 2026. Hue is one of the few places in Vietnam that has kept both the craft of making lion heads and its own local dance style, so the standard here differs from commercial troupes.
It opens the city's Mid-Autumn week: the lion, unicorn and dragon street parade with the lantern procession follows on 21 September, and Đêm rằm Hoàng cung inside the Imperial City on 25 September. Timed well, a single trip covers the competition floor, the street and the palace.
It is an easy win with children — the appeal of a lion dance needs no translation — and rewarding for anyone who photographs movement, colour and stage light. No Vietnamese needed; it is all drums and choreography.
The exact venue within the city and the competition schedule will be released closer to the dates by the tourism department. If you are choosing when to be in Hue this autumn, this week is the one.
