Highland fair «Tết Độc lập – Sắc màu A Lưới» (Independence Day – Colours of A Lưới)

About the event

Over the National Day weekend a market yard in the mountains west of Huế fills up for two days: rice pounded in wooden mortars, looms clacking, sticky-rice cakes steaming inside banana leaves, and after dark the bamboo poles of a sạp dance clapping out a rhythm. You get to see highland culture where people still live by it, rather than behind museum glass.

The anchor of the two days is Dèng (zèng) brocade weaving, the craft of the Tà Ôi people that households in A Lưới have kept alive for centuries; it received its national intangible cultural heritage certificate in January 2017. Beside it come bamboo basketry, hand rice pounding and the making of bánh A Qoạt cakes, all demonstrated live, with visitors invited to try their own hand.

The programme announced by the A Lưới 2 Commune People's Committee:

  • — evening show «Sắc màu đại ngàn – Tự hào Tết Độc lập» at 19:30 on 30 August, performed by village art troupes, artisans and local art clubs
  • — weaving, basketry, A Qoạt cake making and rice pounding — in two slots, 15:30–17:00 and 19:00–21:00, on both days
  • — sạp bamboo dancing, a quiz on the history and culture of A Lưới, and the hands-on «Em là nghệ nhân» session, meaning «I am an artisan»
  • — stalls with cooked food, farm produce, OCOP goods and local specialities; displays of farming tools, musical instruments and traditional dress

It suits families with children, since nearly everything here is meant to be handled; it suits anyone who collects handmade textiles, and anyone who would rather carry home a hand-woven zèng panel or a jar of forest honey than a souvenir-shop magnet. It is also a calmer option than the National Day crowds down in the city.

This is not the first edition. The previous one ran on 1 and 2 August 2026 under the theme «Hè 2026», with the same weaving, rice pounding and an evening concert. Each edition is tied to a holiday and carries its own theme; this one marks 81 years since the August Revolution and the National Day of 2 September.

Stalls open at 08:00 on 29 August and trade late into 30 August, while the craft demonstrations and games are concentrated in the afternoon and evening slots, so a midday arrival may find the yard thin. The organisers published no admission price; food and goods are paid for as at any market.

The road up to A Lưới winds a good deal, yet this is the weekend when the highlands look their best, and the fair repays the drive out of Huế.
