«Lễ vía Quan Thánh Đế Quân» – Quan Công (Guan Yu) Commemoration

#Hoi An#Chua Ong#Quan Cong#temple festival#Chinese-Vietnamese heritage#Ancient Town

About the event

Incense smoke drifts through the main hall while lion and dragon dancers weave down the old streets, as Hội An's Chinese-Vietnamese community honours Quan Công — the deified general Guan Yu, revered across East Asia for loyalty and integrity. Come early, when the agarwood ceremony opens the day and the temple is still quiet, and you'll catch the rites at their most intimate.

Inside Chùa Ông, the commemoration unfolds as a sequence of folk-religious rites you won't find spelled out on any program — Key highlights:

  • The agarwood incense ceremony before the Quan Công statue
  • Altar offerings of whole roast pig, sticky rice with beans (xôi), steamed buns and fruit
  • A procession led by the Phước Lộc Thiên guild
  • Lion, unicorn and dragon dances moving along Lê Lợi, Trần Phú and Trần Hưng Đạo

It rewards culture travellers, photographers chasing colour and movement, the local Hoa (Chinese-Vietnamese) community, and really anyone standing in the Ancient Town that morning.

Quan Công (Quan Vũ) — the Chinese Guan Yu — was a real general of the Three Kingdoms era, later venerated as the embodiment of loyalty, trust and righteousness. Merchants of Hội An's international port built this temple before 1653, and to them he was a guarantor of honest dealing: a fitting patron for a harbour where traders from distant lands closed deals on their word.

If you want to understand what still binds Hội An's merchant heritage together, this is a morning worth building your day around.
