Vinyl soul night «HCMC Soul Club Vol. 2»

   Sixties and seventies soul played on vinyl for the whole night, on a riverside rooftop in Thảo Điền, and nothing to pay at the door. If you have never danced to records that are actually spinning under a needle, this is the easiest way in.

   Ho Chi Minh City Soul Club sums itself up in a handful of words: vinyl, sixties soul, Motown, Stax, Saigon — and every two months it digs a layer deeper. Vol. 1 ran at the end of May at La Scène; vol. 2 moves the record boxes to Le Café des Stagiaires.

   Three DJs are behind the night:

• — Manggo — born in Korea, raised on the island of Saipan, known for vinyl sets of retro disco and boogie classics and for a classic radio-host style
• — Style D
• — Tina Turnatrick — the club's resident, back from her travels with a crate of classic Chicago soul

   The detail worth turning up for: the organisers say Manggo and Style D will work Vietnamese and Korean records from the same era into their sets — something you will almost never hear on a dancefloor here.

   Le Café des Stagiaires is a rooftop and bistro on the Thảo Điền side of the river, named the best rooftop bar and restaurant in Saigon by The Rooftop Guide. You can come early, eat, watch the water, and simply stay on when the records start.

   It is a night for soul and funk listeners, for record collectors, and for anyone who just wants a Saturday out with good music and free entry. Fancy trying a few northern soul steps?
