Exhibition «Vũ Lân Khai Hội» (The Gathering of Lions)

About the event

Handmade lion heads, paper lanterns, ceremonial trays of mooncakes and toys assembled piece by piece: a Mid-Autumn season as it once existed in Vietnamese life, rebuilt inside a gallery in Ho Chi Minh City. Not as decoration, but so you can see the body of folk knowledge sitting behind each object.

The guiding figure is the Lân, the lion. In Vietnamese culture it is more than an auspicious mythical creature: it is where spiritual belief, performance tradition and community life intersect. Taking the lion as its axis, the exhibition evokes the spirit of khai hội, the ceremonial opening of the festive season, when lion dance drums echo beneath the full moon, families gather, and cultural memory passes quietly from one generation to the next.

For centuries Mid-Autumn has been far more than the night of the full moon. It marks the convergence of folk belief, ritual tradition, vernacular arts and communal life, which makes it less a children's celebration than a cultural landscape where memory, craftsmanship and Vietnamese aesthetics still coexist. Over time many customs, crafts and visual symbols once inseparable from the season have faded from everyday life.

The world here is reconstructed from:

  • — carefully researched collections of artefacts and archival material
  • — paper lanterns, handcrafted lion heads, festive trays and toys of earlier generations
  • — immersive display spaces you can walk into rather than only look at

It suits families with children, designers and makers, and anyone who simply wants to understand why a lion drum carries so much. Visitors are invited to explore traditional craftsmanship rather than take one photograph and leave.

If your Mid-Autumn usually amounts to a shop-bought box of mooncakes, an hour here gives the season considerably more depth.
