Lecture «The Loseby Lecture 2026»

   A sitting Justice of the UK Supreme Court lecturing in Saigon on how English commercial law underpins international finance — that is the draw of this year's Loseby Lecture, hosted by BritCham Vietnam together with the British Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City and Dragon Capital.

   The programme:

• — Lord Richard Snowden, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, delivers a condensed Loseby Lecture on the development of English commercial law and the role of common law in international commerce;
• — Andrew Oldland KC reviews how legal frameworks for International Financial Centres have evolved over the past 30 years, with a brief, strictly informational look at Resolution No. 222 and the Law on the Specialist Court;
• — a closing panel: common law and civil law systems, coordination between the Specialist Court and national courts, Vietnamese real property as collateral in an IFC, and the new International Arbitration Centre.

   The lecture honours Francis Loseby, the Hong Kong solicitor who in 1931 took on — without charging a fee — the defence of the arrested Nguyen Ai Quoc (Nguyễn Ái Quốc), the future Ho Chi Minh, and helped shield him from being handed over to the French authorities. The lecture in his name is now an annual fixture: in 2025 its two sessions drew nearly 300 legal professionals. A Hanoi session follows on 26 August.

   It is aimed at practising lawyers and in-house counsel, banks and financial institutions, policymakers and academics. Registration is required and subject to confirmation; places are allocated first come, first served, and the organisers may decline applications from outside the legal and related professions.
