Family and KidsEarth, stones, leaves, seeds, twigs, sand and even spent coffee grounds: every colour in this show was found and made by the children themselves. Three days in an art studio in central Hanoi to see what happens once the shop-bought paint box is set aside.
The works come from students of the Hoa Tâm Art Center. They did not start with manufactured colour but went looking for raw natural material, then boiled, pounded and ground it into pigment. That process art approach does not always run smoothly: it asks children to experiment patiently and to accept how coarse the material can be. A natural palette tends to be muted and limited, and it is precisely that limit which trains a careful hand and an eye fine enough to notice countless different tones.
Beyond any finished piece, the real pleasure here lies in getting muddy and in the moment of delight when a child produces a colour of their own. In a city turning steadily to concrete, this pulls children away from screens and back toward the natural world: free to explore, allowed to get it wrong and try again, with nature as the teacher.
Free workshops run alongside the exhibition, with limited places:
It suits families with young children, art teachers and anyone interested in arts education. The poet William Wordsworth once wrote «Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher», and the whole room is built on that line.
From a lump of earth, a handful of grass or one small turmeric root, you and your children may well find a colour that was never in the box.
