Culture and ArtsThis is the day the coal country remembers where it comes from. In Ha Long, a ceremony and a large art program mark the traditional day of the mining region's workers — a date rooted in one of the biggest labour actions in Vietnam's history.
In brief:
The date reaches back to 1936. On 12 November that year a general strike began — around 30,000 miners across the Vùng mỏ coal basin stopped work at once. It was the largest workers' action in Vietnam at the time and a landmark of the country's labour movement.
Out of those events came a motto the whole region knows — «Kỷ luật và Đồng tâm» («Discipline and Unanimity»). It became the unofficial emblem of mining Quảng Ninh, passed down from one generation of miners to the next. In 2026 the tradition turns exactly 90 — an anniversary the whole province marks.
The day speaks both to the descendants of mining families and to visitors curious about how the coal-country north lives: it blends a formal ceremonial part with a big evening concert. The mood is one of pride in the region and respect for generations of hard work. For many families here, the mines are not distant history but the story of their own parents and grandparents.
The program is open to all — you are free to come and join in.
