   For three days the Van Mieu square in Cao Lanh turns into a festival: a Mekong Delta food fair, an opening concert, an expo — and only at the end of it, the race itself. It is the kind of weekend where whoever comes along to watch has plenty to do.

   The fifth Dat Sen Hong season, run by Nexus Sport Events with VPBank, offers four distances — 5 km, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km — on an AIMS-certified course through the lotus country of Dong Thap, about three hours south-west of Ho Chi Minh City. The day before, KUN FUN RUN Dong Thap sends the children off at 07:00.

   The race-day timetable shows how tightly this is planned: the marathon runs in a 03:30–10:00 window, the half marathon 04:30–07:45, the 10 km 05:30–08:00 and the 5 km 06:00–08:00. Prize-giving is at 09:00 and the bag drop shuts at 10:30.

   Age rules are firm: 18 and over for the marathon, 16 for the half, 10 for the 10 km, 6 for the 5 km. Anyone under 16 needs a parent or guardian signature on the waiver.

   Entry comes in four waves. Early Bird (11 July – 12 August): 5 km 415,000 VND, 10 km 555,000, 21 km 695,000, 42 km 835,000. Regular (13 August – 17 September): 575,000–1,135,000. Late (18 September – 2 October): 845,000–1,555,000. Enter from 18 September and your name will not be printed on the bib.
