Photo exhibition «Cụ Huỳnh Thúc Kháng – Một đời vì nước, một lòng vì dân»

   A Confucian scholar who took his doctoral degree in 1904, spent thirteen years in the Côn Đảo penal colony, came out and ran his own newspaper for sixteen years, and at the age of seventy served for almost five months as acting head of state. A documentary photo display about that life now stands in the village where he was born, in the rural interior of Đà Nẵng rather than on the coast. If you are heading that way, keep an hour free.

   Huỳnh Thúc Kháng was born on 1 October 1876 in Thạnh Bình, a village that then belonged to Quảng Nam province. Before his arrest he was one of the leaders of the Duy Tân reform movement in Quảng Nam, together with Phan Châu Trinh and Trần Quý Cáp.

1908 — arrested and deported to Côn Đảo, released only in 1921
1927 — founded the newspaper Tiếng Dân in Huế with Đào Duy Anh, it ran until 1943
1946 — Minister of the Interior, acting head of state from 31 May to 21 October
1947 — died on 21 April in Quảng Ngãi, buried on Thiên Ấn hill

   The display suits anyone interested in early twentieth-century Vietnamese history, local teachers and pupils, and visitors coming for the Lộc Yên – Thạnh Bình village festival: both sit in the same commune, so one trip covers them together. On 1 October 2026 it will be 150 years since his birth, which puts this showing inside the anniversary year.

   The memorial house stands in Thạnh Bình commune, on the man's own home ground. The city tourism announcement gives no opening hours, no admission price, no organiser of the display and no number of photographs on show. Ask the memorial house or the village festival committee before making the drive.

   One life told in photographs, in the village where that life started — reason enough to turn inland from the coast for an afternoon.
