Festival «Thác Bản Giốc»

   In Vietnam's far northeast, where the Quây Sơn river spills over tiers of limestone right on the Chinese frontier, stands one of Asia's most beautiful transboundary waterfalls. Cao Bằng province picks its finest season to show off: when the falls run full and the rice terraces ripen to gold, white water drops in broad curtains and its roar fills the whole valley.

Between the stalls the mountain larder piles up — smoked sausage, Trùng Khánh chestnuts, leaf-fermented corn wine and herbs — while the same paths open into a karst world of stone towers, caves and underground rivers. The shot worth the journey is the milky sheet of water against green hills and yellow fields.

   For locals it is a family reunion and a point of pride; for travellers, a chance to meet a Vietnam few postcards show — cool mountains instead of tropical beaches, a mosaic of ethnic life closer to southern China than to the coastal resorts.
