The 37th Hue Traditional Boat Race «Giải đua ghe truyền thống thành phố Huế»

   National Day in Hue has its own soundtrack: the wooden clapper keeping the stroke rate and the noise coming off both banks of the Perfume River. It is the day of the year when the largest local crowd turns out for anything, and it costs nothing — you just need to claim a spot early.

   This is the 37th edition, run by the Hue Department of Culture and Sports on the city budget as part of the autumn block of Festival Huế 2026. Crews come from the villages along the river and the Tam Giang lagoon, and placing is a matter of village pride rather than a show put on for visitors.

   Racing takes place on the stretch of river running through the centre, so the grandstands are the embankments, the bridges and the riverside parks. Position yourself near the turning marker if you can — that is where most of the overtaking happens.

   It works for families, for anyone who photographs sport, and for travellers who want to watch competition rather than choreography. No Vietnamese required: everything that matters happens on the water.
