Culture and ArtsOne night a month the town turns the electric lighting down and leaves the lanterns on. The streets become pedestrian-only, motorbikes stay out, and the pace drops to something close to that of the old trading port — which is not what you see in Hoi An by daylight.
The Full-Moon Night is held on the 14th night of each lunar month. This month that falls on 24 September, the eve of the eighth-month full moon, so it lands right at the peak of the Mid-Autumn season. You can walk under the old tiled roofs, watch folk performances, join traditional games and take in the atmosphere along the Hoai River.
Good for anyone who wants to see Hoi An not through a daytime camera lens but in the light it was built to live in. It works with children too: the folk games and lanterns are their part of the evening.
One practical note: walking the ancient town costs nothing, but entering its heritage houses still uses the standard combined ticket — the source says nothing about any price attached to this particular night.
See you under the lanterns, on the eve of the eighth-month full moon.
