Culture and ArtsThe town that has become a symbol of travel in Southeast Asia is throwing a party for the travel industry itself. Hoi An will host the local celebration of World Tourism Day — the annual date on which the global tourism community honours both travellers and the people who make travel happen.
World Tourism Day was established by the United Nations tourism body (UN Tourism, formerly UNWTO) and has been celebrated since 1980; the date marks the adoption of the organisation's statutes in 1970. According to UN Tourism announcements, the 2026 edition focuses on artificial intelligence and digital technology in travel.
The detailed programme in Hoi An has not been published yet: Da Nang's official calendar of events confirms only the date and the host location — Hoi An ward. Watch the city's channels closer to late September.
Hoi An and tourism
A thriving trading port of the 15th–19th centuries, the old town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1999 and preserves about 1,360 historic structures, including the famous Japanese Covered Bridge. Tourism is the town's lifeblood — which makes this professional holiday feel very much like Hoi An's own.
If you are in Central Vietnam in late September, drop by Hoi An: the celebration will add an extra layer to a town that is reason enough to visit on any day.
